This photograph taken by the Star Photos, Perth graphically shows a D2 in deep trouble somewhere in the Carron Valley Forest.
The newspaper story runs: Remakable Salvage Feat. ‘Three Ton Tractor in Bog. A remarkable salvage feat was the sequel to the sinking of a three ton Caterpillar tractor in a bog near Fintry. The tractor, in use in land reclamation work for the Forestry Commission, sank almost out of sight in the bog, and lay for a full week two thirds immersed in the bog water. Eventually it was pulled out bodily with the use of a still larger machine, and despite its immersion, started immediately. Experts who carried out the salvage work likened the conditions to tank traps in military warfare.’

There is no mention of the many man hours it must have taken to dig and bail out the surrounding soil, peat and water to expose the machine and a sloping ramp for it to be pulled up. Appropriate clothing as shown would have been oilskins, boots and boiler suits!
