Achnashellach Forest - Hand cultivated plot

This dramatic photograph shows a small experimental plot hand dug in such a method as to emulate potential mechanical ploughing. This must have taken considerable time and effort looking at the stony and compacted gravel soil.
It was quite some time after this that machines and ploughs were developed to carry out this style of cultivation prior to planting.
