The title of this map as Spinningdale Wood (See PDF)is confusing but may have something to do with its acquisition origins. It is certainly some distance from Spinningdale.

It is difficult to say whether the whole area outlined in yellow was acquired at one time but part Countess Duchess Wood was certainly planted with Scots pine in 1961. Note the detail indicating that part of the area still carried forest trees when acquired – possibly of poor quality and not worth felling at the time the other areas were clearfelled. The compartments numbering runs from 72 to 83 but does not show anything for the rest of the FC owned areas which may have initially been croft outruns or classed as Forest Worker Holdings. Can anyone clarify?

The land below Embo Street was eventually the site of Dornoch Forest Nursery.
