Oykel Forest — Cassley/Balnagown Planting Ma

This consists of two composite maps each covering the same area of Cassley and Balgown but one is more complete than the other (See Picture No 1907 for more complete one). The planting appears to continue annually from the Rosehall Wood in that the small isolated area of Sron na Croiche was completed in 1958 and the planting then moved onto Badair Dhonnadh for 1959 and 1960 and Rossal Wood from 1961 to 1964. The compartment numbers do not follow on from Rosehall Wood however in that there is a gap between Compartment 39 and the start of the new run from in this map from Compartment 73 onto 105. (Note that Langwell Wood with its details in another Picture Record starts at Compartment 40.)
The planting in two of these woods next to the River Oykel contained a high proportion of pure Scots pine with some areas of European larch and Sitka spruce but mixtures of Scots pine and Lodgepole pine begin to show in Badair Dhonnadh and then become more extensive in Rossal and there also quite large areas of pure Lodgpole pine reflects the increasing amounts of peat covered soil. On the south section of Rossal Wood there are some sizable areas of pure larch and also of Sitka spruce.
