Balblair Forest Planting Map — Inveroykel

Balblair Forest Planting Map — Inveroykel

Date Added: 12 August 2013 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1968 Picture No: 1905

The maps are courtesy of North Highland Forest District, Golspie which were photographed by Norman Davidson.

This final map of the Balblair sequence shows the Inverkyle acquisition and most of the area divided into compartments from 103 up to 150 with 147 being the high elevation plot planted in 1967. Planting commenced in 1967 and is shown for part of 1968 but it is likely that amalgamations and resurveys of the large combined forest area of Shin would have resulted in sets of new style maps and these old traditional ones were abandoned. Only a small portion of the tree species was added in this case.

It is interesting to note that the original Ordnance Survey map does show some type of woodland cover over this whole area, most likely birch, rowan etc which may well have disappeared through grazing pressure. Can anyone confirm?

The area described as "some type of woodland cover" had a crop of Scots Pine of variable stocking. It was removed by MacKay, Timber Merchants and Sawmillers of Tain in 1963-64 immediately prior to the estate being acquired by Forestry Commission Comment left on 06 December 2013 at 16:16 by Frank Thom
