Planting above Loch Avich — Inverinan Forest

Date Added: 18 July 2013 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1964 Picture No: 1881

Photograph taken by Don MacCaskill and image courtesy of Bridget MacCaskill, Strathyre. Don was based as Head Forester at Inverinan from about 1960 through to 1968 before transferring initially to Allean Forest and then Strathyre Forest in 1972.

This squad of five men are working on a section of very steep hillside above Loch Avich planting trees either by screefing the vegetation off and planting directly into the ground or into hinge turfs.

The village of Kilmun can be seen in the distance on the edge of the bay and nearer to the left hand side possibly Lochavich House but can anyone confirm?

The men are quite distant but the enlarged photo may help to identify them.
Can anyone name the men?

This picture reminds me of a work mate called George Trail who was foreman forester at Panmure Estate in the late 1970s telling me of the time he was tree planting with the Forestry Commission, apparently it was a really warm day most of the squad were really thirsty luckily there was a stream near bye so they all had a good drink of cold clear water, later further up the stream they found to their horror a decomposing deer lying in it. You are looking at Loch Awe. The village in the distance is Dalavich. The grazing below the planters is Kilmun holding occupied by Thomso Wright an Fc plough operator until he moved to Kilchrennan. The sharp bend in the road sees the road crossing the river Avich. The house to the left was lived in by the council roadman; the one to the right was the village school teachers house (originally the school). Above that again set back in the woods is Avich House. A little house just south of the bridge before the school is called Mill of Avich.
