Deepening a drain by Hand - Inverinan Forest
Photograph taken by Don MacCaskill and image courtesy of Bridget MacCaskill, Strathyre. Don was based as Head Forester at Inverinan from about 1960 through to 1968 before transferring initially to Allean Forest and then Strathyre Forest in 1972.
Here a team of three men are again deepening drains in a boggy hollow which appears to have been planted with lodgepole pine of turves some years previously.
Duncan MacDougall, Inverinan, comments ‘ This photograph was taken about 1960 at Loch nan Losgann, Achnamaddy in the 1955 planting area which had partially failed and the plough drains were being deepened by hand to about 80cm. The man with the rutter is Frank Cakebread and the other with him is Eachan MacIntyre. The others are too far to recognise.’
