Forestry Hostel at Tulliallan
Photographs courtesy of William Fleming, Polmont.
William spent two years as an apprentice Forest Craftsman based at Strathyre Forest but had short spells at other nearby locations to get experience in work types not readily available at Strathyre. He believes this photograph shows Tulliallan Forestry Hostel where he lived for a few weeks while working on the forest and nursery.
Can anyone remember names of people who stayed in this bothy?

I asked my Father about this and he said it is the Tulliallan hostel. He belives Angus MacAllister was one person who lived in it and that John Gould was either hostel keeper or his wife was. Around the time of the "Blow" (1968)the Hostel moved to a house in Westfield.

I lived in the Tulliallan bothy from July 1958 until it closed around December 1958. Like William Fleming, I did my two years as an apprentice at Strathyre then moved to Tulliallan. Unlike Strathyre, where we were teenagers, all the occupants of the Tulliallan hostel were adults, the oldest being close to 60 years old. Like Strathyre, there were two billets and about a dozen of us altogether. I'm struggling to remember any of their names but would remember them if I saw them written down.
It was tough on some of these guys as it was the only home they had and it was just unilaterally closed down. We had a farewell party at a pub in Kincardine. As an eighteen year old and the youngest, it was the plan to get me as drunk as possible. The plan was very successful and I suffered the next day planting trees in very hard ground. Finally I had to give up and retreat back to the bothy and take to my bed. The foreman, miserable bugger, was totally unsympathetic. Comment left on 10 March 2014 at 03:26 by David Balfour
