Graham Pyatt was one of the foremost experts in forest soils in the Forestry Commission. Considerable effort was expended in trying to analyse and place into categories the very wide range of soils and soil conditions experienced in UK. Each soil type eventually had a suite of information allocated on ideal cultivation methods, species to plant, fertiliser prescriptions and expected growth outputs for various tree species.
Teams of foresters trained in soil profile recognition spent many years digging soil pits all over the existing and proposed new forest areas and producing what was termed ‘forest soil maps’ as a finished product with some additional general information on the whole site. The different soil types were all given a short number letter code and allocated a colour from which the maps were compiled. The information on the little sign ‘Type 5 Intergrade TV68’ is a mystery – can someone explain? Year of photograph is guestimate!
Perhaps at times more attention could have been applied to the information in those maps?
