Planting mattock

Photograph year is unknown. This tool was used frequently in the days before machine cultivation. The broad part of the blade served to remove surface vegetation and was used vigorously until a patch of about 15 inches square was bare soil. The pointed end or the broad end (depending on stone conditions) was driven into the middle and levered up to create a gash into which tree roots were inserted and then firmed with the foot.
