Roy Lister Robinson - Lord Robinson
Roy Lister Robinson - Lord Robinson of Kielder Forest. Seconded to the explosives department, Ministry of Munitions and Agriculture (1915-18), he subsequently became secretary to the forestry sub-committee of the Cabinet Reconstruction (Acland) Committee and was largely responsible for the report which led to the establishment of the Forestry Commission in 1919 and his appointment as its technical commissioner. He became vice-chairman of the commission in 1929, and chairman in 1932, holding that office until he died. He was appointed O.B.E. in 1918, knighted in 1931 and raised to the peerage in 1947.

Jane, Roy Robinson is on the left, standing. I have another picture of him which we sourced from the Forestry Commission. If they are agreeable I will have it posted on this website as well. I am part of the UHI centre for history team, which is researching the social history of Scottish forestry in the 20th century with this website part of that project. Your relative was highly influential and we would love to hear more about him.

Many thanks Mairi. Unfortunately my father (who was Roy's cousin, as I understand)died in 1996. The only information I have about Roy Robinson would already be in the public arena - the town of Macclesfield, here in South Australia has a book containing information about him, given that he's a former resident (there's a park named 'Roy Robinson Park' in the town) but I'm sure you'd already have this information. I'm highly delighted to have stumbled upon your website - quite by accident and I should have been able to guess which one was Roy, because of the strong familial resemblance to my father. Again, thank you. I wonder if he had my father's and my grandfather's lovely nature. Jane Robinson

I believe my father scattered Lord Robinson's ashes in 1953 around the memorial cairn to him (which is marked on the current 1:25000 OS map).

My father Jack Chard OBE worked in the Forestry Commission and knew Roy Robinson from 1935 till shortly before he died in 1952. My fathers book: CHARD. J.S.R. 1994.Red Deer and Forestry, in History and Prehistory, is being published in an enlarged second edition, in which Roy Robinson will be mentioned in one of the many new additional notes. I will be pleased to hear from anybody who could contribute illustrations of Jack Chard, Roy Robinson, or their work in forestry or JC at the 5th. World Forestry Conference at Seattle USA, 1964

Slightly off-topic but I'm very keen to get in touch with the Bob Chard who left a comment on this photo in 2021. I'm visiting Arnhem on 18th August 2025 and will be paying tribute to his uncle, Captain Peter Chard, who died there in September 1944.
