N(S) Senior Conservancy and District Forest Staff
The photograph is courtesy of the family of George Dey. George took many forestry photographs in his forestry career and many are now shown on this web site. Check under ‘Groups’ and George Dey Collection.
One of the few organised group photographs of senior Conservancy and Forest District staff. It is possible this may have been to mark the last days of the North Conservancy before it amalgamated with the East Conservancy or was it just the first occasion all the senior staff were together under the new Forest District structure?
At this time the new Forest District formations consisted of two levels – larger ones with a Forest Officer Grade 1 (FO1) in charge and smaller ones with a Forest Officer Grade 2 (FO2) in charge. The smaller Forest Districts tended to be those that were more isolated geographically such as Mull and also Sunart but of course as time went on, IT and telecommunications systems improved and further efficiencies were sought. The larger districts became larger and the smaller ones disappeared. It was ever thus!

Could someone correct any names, name spelling and job roles and provide a location?
According to the 84/5 Annual Report N(S), kindly provided by Mairi Stewart, Finlay Macrae, who retired that year and was replaced by Norman Munro. Also Ron Johnstone (resumably Ron) was transferred from NE England to the new Wester Ross district. And Graham Gill took over from Mr Dey in Inverness. The following year Bob Cathie had retired (replaced by Jim Atterson). Allan Stevenson arrived to be Operations Support Officer. In 86/87, Mr Malcolmson retired, as did Norman Munro and Frank Sutherland.
Times of great change!
