Kuboto Excavator in Forest Clear Fell
The photograph is courtesy of the family of George Dey. George took many forestry photographs in his forestry career and many are now shown on this web site. Check under ‘Groups’ and George Dey Collection.
No location has been given for this image but could be Skye? The need to cultivate and drain sites following felling was obvious especially in the wetter parts of the country and on peaty sites. This shows the early use of excavators on the sites but only being used to reinstate the old hand drains or create new ones. From these early beginnings the concept of using the soil and peat from the drain to form a mound on the ground surface in which to plant the new crop of trees originated. Not unlike the old hand turfing method but in much more demanding conditions.
On the left hand side of the picture on the drier mineral ground there are signs of surface cultivation but cannot tell if it was done by this machine.
Any further information on site and operator is very welcome.
