Aerial view of Kirkney Hill, Clashindarroch

The aerial photograph shows Kirkney Hill and looking further eastwards in a line beyond Gartly Village are the hills of Corskie, Wishach, Foundland and in the very far distance Tillymorgan with a small block of old larch trees on top(see larger photograph). Kirkney Hill must have been one of the first areas in Clashindarroch to be planted as the experimental planting blocks that you can see laid out on the northern slopes date from that period. Some of the early experimental plantings are still there! This shows the forest before most of the Kirkney area was largely felled in the 80s and also before the plantings higher up the hills above what is now Kirkney quarry, and also Corskie and Wishach Hills. Hill of Milduan (unplanted then)is shown on bottom edge of photo. Strange how the geology has formed a line of hills which all have past slate quarries - something to to do with a harder ridge of rock being more resistant to glacial action? When did the roads go in - the Birks road looks very fresh? Strone hill trees are very young?
