This is a likely to have been a visit to see how the Smalley digger was coping with forestry draining conditions. At this period there were very few options in smaller and lower cost diggers that could work in local forests and carry out draining operations in some new planting areas as well in the increasing number of restocking sites. This version of the Smalley digger has skids rather than tracks and has to haul itself around by pulling or pushing with its bucket. It worked reasonably well on flat smooth ground but was less suitable on other rougher sites.

In the attached PDF there are other views and includes a couple of onlookers as well as a better view of the driver. Can anyone provide names and any information on the machine?
