Spreading a Foam barrier with the Foam unit
The photograph is courtesy of the family of George Dey. George took many forestry photographs in his forestry career and many are now shown on this web site. Check under ‘Groups’ and George Dey Collection.
One of a series of photographs at South Strome Forest showing a fire control training session to Forestry Commission staff using the mobile Foam Unit. A wide layer of dry straw has been laid on the rather damp hillside. The Muskeg is running along the edge of the straw and as it does so the foam unit is spraying out a foam barrier also along the edge. The photographs in the PDF show the heather and straw being lit and extinguishing itself as it hits the foam barrier.
In this image Mike Aldridge is furthest from the camera organising the training. The next man also in the blue water proofs has been identified as Jim Lyon by Mike Aldridge (also part of the training team) and man next to the camera is Ian Cameron from Lairg who was also a Muskeg driver and his machine can just be seen below on the extreme left. In due course a similar Foam Unit unit was stationed at Lairg.
