Hand Planting and Draining Tool catalogue 1950

Date Added: 24 April 2007 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1950 Picture No: 168

I remember the Forestry Commission tool catalogue as late as 1970s and the page on hand planting and draining tools had hardly changed. Chieftain Forge were one of the main suppliers and brought out their own catalogue. The blade of tool No12 was about knee height and it took a real 'man' to work it all day!
1.Schlick vertical notch spade; 2.Mansfield planting spade; 3.Semicircular transplanting spade; 4.Claycutter or Drain Tool; 5.Planting spade; 6.Square drain shovel; 7.Diamond pointed drain shovel(Dumfries); 8 and 9.Circled grafting tool; 10.Circled drain spade; 11.Sheep or hill drain drag; 12.Rutter spade (Left or Right foot);13.Rutter spade (Kirriemuir)LF or RF; 14.Hill drain drag; 15.Drainer's drag; 16.Hodding spade; 17.Flauchter spade;18.Hay spade

Does anyone have past photos with these and other hand tools in use?

Excellent. I am trying to access an image of a Schlich tree planting spade, a Mansfield spade, a transplanting spade and a spear. Thank you. Comment left on 07 February 2016 at 12:19 by Elizabeth Thraves.
