Controlled burning Skye Glen Brittle area
The photograph is courtesy of the family of George Dey. George took many forestry photographs in his forestry career and many are now shown on this web site. Check under ‘Groups’ and George Dey Collection.
It was often advantageous to the Forestry Commission and the crofters if they pooled their efforts to carry out controlled burning exercises around or near vulnerable forests. The forests had better protection and the crofters managed to get some areas burnt for an early bite that would have been difficult and risky otherwise.
It is not known if these were Forestry Commission employees with some local crofters working on controlling the spread of the fire to prevent it from crossing the public road or burning back and under the young forest.
Check the attached PDFs for more views of the men. Can anyone be named?
