Dropping a water pump at Knockie, Inverness
The photograph is courtesy of the family of George Dey. George took many forestry photographs in his forestry career and many are now shown on this web site. Check under ‘Groups’ and George Dey Collection.
Great shot of PLM helicopter G-BAUM dropping fire pump close into a water source where the firemen will set it up to pump from a dam or a fast flowing stream. Just to the left can be seen a large frame holding a long length of fire hose. View later images to see the frame laying out hose for this joint exercise.
Note the doors are off the rear of the helicopter so that men can enter and disembark easily from the machine. One part of the exercise was to safely load 4 fire fighting exercise staff (both Fire service and forestry staff) at a time into the helicopter at one location, fly them to another point and safely unload them. The difficult part was to transport the fire brooms as well with the men and remember to keep them low at all times. The brooms were laid across the rear floor of the helicopter and kept in place by the passenger’s feet.
