Forestry workers at fire Inverbroom Wester Ross
The photograph is courtesy of the family of George Dey. George took many forestry photographs in his forestry career and many are now shown on this web site. Check under ‘Groups’ and George Dey Collection.
The attached PDF shows some more photographs of the men possibly from Achnashellach Forest trying to control the fire but faces are not clearly seen. Note the two types of fire beaters being used - in the middle is the traditional birch broom beater but on either side are beaters made from forest pole handles and pieces of shaped conveyor belting bolted in place. Many still discuss the merits of the various types of beaters but the belting and wire netting beaters at least lasted much longer in hot fires. Any views?
