A photograph of William Fleming from Tighnabruich posing with an axe at the base of a very large Scots pine very close to the hostel where he stayed during his two years on a forest worker apprenticeship scheme. No tree was harmed in this photoshoot.

As apprentices they had some afternoons off in lieu of them attending night classes down in Callander. There was little to do on a midweek afternoon around the hostel and William remembers, along with three others, tackling a very large birch tree with axes and chopping it down so that it fell completely into burn that flowed past the village into Loch Lubnaig. Later that evening going down in the lorry transport to Callander they were very surprised to see what looked like a large Viking vessel with high prow sailing down the loch. Only a bit later did they realise it was in fact the tree from their afternoon’s leisure activities.
