William Fleming planting at Dullatur, Cumbernauld

William spent two years on a Forestry Commission apprentice scheme in Strathyre Forest and afterwards for a short spell at Cumbernauld Forest. Here he is planting Lodgepole pine with the Forth and Clyde canal in the back ground. He recalls that here on this site he strayed over the compartment boundary and planted the trees on the remains of a Roman Wall (Antonine). Following a ticking off from the forester he had to go and remove all these trees.
At Cumbernauld William was based at Limerigg near Falkirk which included the Barns and Barnsmuir plantations and worked at two new ones at ‘The Desert’ and ‘The Moss’ on the A706 near Bathgate as well as at Fauldhouse in West Lothian. He also worked for some time at Carron Valley Forest near Denny.
Whilst at Strathyre William was involved in planting at the old German POW camp at Cultybraggan near Comrie.
