Constructing new forest road at Runacraig

William spent two years on a Forestry Commission apprentice scheme in Strathyre Forest living in the hostel with about 16 other young lads.
He recalls when he was there the forest was at the stage when thinning was required and a number of new forest harvesting roads were being constructed. This one is at Runacorn, Strathyre Forest, and the Braes of Balquidder can be seen in the back ground.
The smallish trees in first thinning were then generally cut down with ‘Bushman’ saws and sned with axes but William remembers that some contractors did have some early types of chainsaws.
