Bob Budge on D4 in Rannoch Forest

Ian goes on to say that he took the photograph in the Black Wood of Rannoch (South side of Loch Rannoch) when Bob was ploughing with Jim Connell. The Caterpillar D4 (FC1374)was about 10 years old at the time and went on later to end its career hauling culvert pipes for the road squad. In the meantime Bob Budge got a new Caterpillar D4C to replace the old one.

I worked with Bob on the squad at Pitlochry. He had a stroke while working in late 1972 near Queens view but later recovered. I left the area 1974. Sorry to hear of his demise.
He was always a gentleman. An expression he often used was “ No hurry North of Dunkeld”.

Bob lived a varied and sometimes colourful life. He left his native Orkney around 1950 and came to live with us at the Forestry Houses at Swanley Fetteresso, (he was my Mother's brother) Bob worked at the forestry nursery there for a short period before emigrating to Australia where he worked on various cattle and sheep stations in New South Wales. He returned to Scotland
around 1955/56 and lived in Banchory for a while and working at the local sawmill and various other forestry related jobs. About 1958 he rejoined the Forestry Commission as a plant operator. around 1960/61 he moved to the Pitlochry area. Sadly, in 1976 Bob suffered a stroke and passed away aged 54.
