Ploughing tractors bogged at Lochans near Lairg 3

Len Newman looks on as Sandy Allison, foreman mechanic and Angus Ross, mechanic from the Lairg forestry workshop start the recovery process of both tractors. Large baulks of timber to form digger mats are behind the track and Angus is about to attach the track to the mats which will lift the tractor over the top of the mats as it reverses back. Sandy is using his special spade to dig down to the tractor tow bar to attach a tow rope. Ian Cameron with the Muskeg in the back ground bringing in the mats and equipment.

I was a pin-man for a three tractor team pulling the big drainage plough back in the 70s on Shin. We had two Bowen 60s and an old hired County conversion, we hit a bit of very soft ground which had to have a furrow through the middle. The County was lead machine and crossed alone then winched the no 2 tractor across, no 3 was still hooked to the plough and being winched by no 2 with the County as an anchor, well she didn't make it! All we could see next morning was about six inches of exhaust stuck up, no digger in those days- it took us two weeks to dig it out! I remember two of the drivers, Star Matheson and Johnny Mackay. Johnny was a ganger on Shin and was a good man.

The tracks on this tractor consisted of low ground pressure apical track shoes which had been extended both sides to produce a very low ground pressure machine that could nearly walk on water !! Comment left on 16 April 2007 at 16:19 by David McQuillan
