Conservator visit to Forest

This photograph is the P59/62 Aultbea block, locally known as Goose Loch. Situated about 1 mile east of Loch Ewe. Aultbea at that time was a self contained accounting satellite of Slattadale, usually with a team of 4-5 local men. Foresters based in Aultbea: Duncan MacLennan 1958, Alistair MacInnes 1959-60), Jim McIntyre (1960-62) and John Boustead (1962-??). Various blocks were planted ranging from Dundonnell to Poolewe. Included in the social community programme was advise and assistance to various estates and crofters. Requests for a 'few freebies' were not unknown at planting season, if available an extra bundle or two of SS or LP was usually included in the end of season nursery delivery to accommodate! It's interesting now to see how many croft houses and gardens display windswept SS shelters. The office which was situated in a gravel pit fully exposed to the west overlooking Loch Ewe and out to the Minch. This was an excellent view point but had the problem during the tourist season of also being a 'public convenience' which meant treading carefully to get into the office. Not to be outdone I situated two of my beehives close by the door on the lee side --- end of problem!
