Aline Forest - Lewis - Single furrow ploughing

Date Added: 24 January 2013 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1977 Picture No: 1484

The photograph is courtesy of the family of George Dey. George took many forestry photographs in his forestry career and many are now shown on this web site. Check under ‘Groups’ and George Dey Collection.

This photograph and the others are a series showing single furrow ploughing at Aline Forest on Lewis. Unfortunately the shadows over the face of the tractor driver make it impossible to see his face clearly. The tractor registration is EHM680J and is FC No 58662.

The tractor has an unusually long track frame extending well beyond the original tractor body and wide track plates. Can anyone name this conversion and describe its history?

The PDF shows more views of the tractor ploughing, a second tractor in the distance, lochs and latterly Davie Roberston, Chief Forester standing in an older part of the forest.

Any suggestions as to the names of the tractor drivers would very welcome.

The tractor in this picture is a Bowen 60 Mk1 produced by the Edinburgh based International tractor dealers James Bowen Ltd. It was based on an International BTD8 tractor with modified running gear and cost £5056. This actual tractor was returned to Chapelhall on completion of ploughing duties in 1981 and converted to a drill rig for the Civil Engineers.
