The Tirfor hand winch is fixed on a section of the skyline cable where it comes down from the winch tower. A Trewhella clamp (out of sight on the left) was used to create the fixture onto the Tirfor winch rope hook. The Tirfor is hooked on to an anchor tree to the right and by cranking the hand lever the Tirfor winch rope was pulled to the right through the machine and hence tightened up the skyline. During operation the skyline was kept taught and upwards of a tonne of pulling power could be exerted by the winch.
