Cablecrane course Glengarry Forest

The anchor cable from the top of the winch tower is tied back onto a strop fixed around the base of a large tree. A Trewhella clamp is fitted to the end of the strop and the anchor guy cable threaded through this when the clamp is opened by sliding the centre section to the left. It is self locking when the strain comes on the anchor rope which is normally done by moving the tractor with tower backwards until the two anchor ropes are evenly taught.
Note the rubber sleeve to act as a protective band but in actual fact it did little to prevent damage to the base of the tree and many of the trees subsequently died from severe damage to the cambium layer. Not easily seen but there is a metal plate with spike driven into the back of the tree. The strop is fitted just below a welded bar on this plate to prevent the strop riding up the stem of the tree when the winch is in action.
