Side view of Igland winch on a Fordson tractor and Chaplehall tower. The cage offers some protection to the operator as he stands operating the crutch and brake levers for each drum. The tower anchor guys can just be seen going to the right and at the top, the skyline passes over the central pulley.

The tyre mounted on the skyline is used to act as a buffer when working on up hill slopes. Should the haul back line break the skyline carriage is free to run down line at considerable speed and crash into the top of the tower. There was usually a warning from the choker man but the sound and sight of the rapidly approaching carriage quickly sent the winch operator scurrying for a safe location. A bit worrying in this shot are the three electric cables above the tower but one assumes the power had been turned off!

The drum fixed on the large tractor wheel is the storage drum for the skyline and would have a capacity for about 350 meters of 19mm wire cable.
