The Valmet forwarder/processor is using its grab to grip part of the load of trees brought in by the Timberjack and is cross cutting the grab full with its grab mounted saw. Looking at the follow on images in the PDF the measuring system appears to be a pole stuck in one of the holes in the grab head frame. This was probably accurate enough for pulp wood which had a reasonable cutting tolerance of around 2.5 – 3.0 metres. It was critical however not to exceed the maximum length as that jambed up the pulp mill machinery and could result in whole lorry loads rejected. (The author does recall when based at Leanachan the harvesting team were called upon from time to time to go to the mill and shave of the long portions from overlong pulp pieces.) The Valmet stacks the cut pulp after cross cutting. Note the large pile of cut ends lying about.
