Tree species planted in 1950 and 1970

George has taken some photographs of a forest promotion display at some location not recorded. This particular image shows the proportions of the main conifer species planted in years 1950 and 1970 in what is the present day Aberdeenshire.
The 1950s species proportions really reflect the traditional forest plantings in former woodlands and lower elevation sites. The 1970s figures are more a result of forestry ‘going up the hill’ as more and more higher elevation and formerly difficult peaty sites were prepared with ploughing machinery. Lodgpole pine and Sitka spruce were the main species with the greatest ability to survive to form a timber crop in these more demanding conditions.
