Cairnbann Village and Crinan Canal circa 1958
The photograph is courtesy of the family of George Dey. George took many forestry photographs in his forestry career and many are now shown on this web site. Check under ‘Groups’ and George Dey Collection.
The view from a lock looking across the canal into the former Work Scheme camp which was subsequently used as a forestry camp during and after the WW2. The buildings which can be seen are part of the lower camp section but the roofs and chimneys of the upper section can just be noticed higher up.
Can anyone identify the buildings and who lived in them?

I found this very interesting as I actually stayed in the Work Scheme camp when the Forestry used it. I stayed there from 1950 until 1971 when the FC sold the land to Argyll & Bute Council who demolished the houses and then built new Council houses, one of which I was allocated. I still stay there today.

I lived there 1952-64 apart from a few years at Aberfoyle. The buildings at the bottom of the hill seen in this photo were all workshops, Joiners, mechanics and blacksmith's. There was a community hall next and the houses were higher up the hill. A sawmill was built further along the canal when we lived there, not sure if they converted existing buildings or built new ones.
