Yellow Bird fixed wing fertilising Bennachie

George records this event from Millstone hill on Bennachie Forest as the Yellow Bird light fixed wing aircraft G-AYUD loaded with ground rock phosphate flies over the forest spreading its load. The hopper within the fuselage of the aircraft had a simple wide gate valve which opened allowing the fertiliser to drop out. Simple but not a very uniform throughput and the operation depended on the aircraft flying fast over small long incremental strips of about 5 meters wide to even out the overall application. Marking and guiding the line of the flight path of these strips by men with flags was a real nightmare. No Sat Nav in those days!
