This well defined photograph shows a special twin furrow plough designed to ‘complete’ plough the hillside much the same manner as a farmer would his fields. There was a view that complete ploughing and the mixing of the peat top layer with the mineral lower layers would lead to increased nutrients being made available to the planted trees. The trees certainly got off to a great start but slowed down markedly in later years. Another disadvantage was the very exposed and visible young trees which attracted the sole attention of the browsers!

This site seems to be high up in Clashindarroch and suspect it is on its western boundary around the Red Hill area. The tractor is certainly a large Caterpillar - D7 (not so -it is a Fowler Challenger 33). Can anyone confirm and also name the driver? Reg No of tractor YYR991H.

Does anyone know who the manufacture of the plough is or if they are still manufactured? We are looking for this type of plough to mix the secondary gravel layer with the upper peaty layer and hopefully improve the soil quality. Comment left on 27 March 2016 at 21:40 by Shaun
Hello Shaun. I doubt if any of these ploughs are made today but some old ones could be in a back yard somewhere. Check out Picture No 510 for Douglas Clark's address whose father manufactured these machines. Comment left on 28 March 2016 at 08:17 by Norman Davidson
