Axe and crosscut saw felling team
Image is courtesy of Kay Thomas, Dingwall, who goes on to say that the man on the left of the picture is her uncle Archibald (Archie) MacDonald. She does not know the other two names and believes the photograph was taken in the Tomintoul/Aberlour area in the late 1940s.
Archie is holding a large Scotch Wedge axe possibly around 7lbs in weight and the young man on the right a cross cut saw around 6 foot long. The gullets look quite wide in this saw and could indicate that this is an American model possibly a Disston. The man in the middle is holding a well worn pole which could be used for pushing over the tree as it was being cut through or it is just possible it may be the upper end of a cant hook for turning logs.
Does anyone recognise the two young men?
