Inverliever — Horse extraction
The photograph is courtesy of the family of George Dey. George took many forestry photographs in his forestry career and some are now shown on this web site.
George records in his diary taking some photographs of felling, brashing and rafting in 1956. There was no mention of horse extraction but as it is one of a small number of black and white images in his west coast collection it is possible that this was taken about the same time.
This is an excellent image of a horseman with his Clydesdale type horse working in the wood. The hems, collar, back band, chain traces and swingle tree all look in good condition as does the horse. It seems to be working with a relatively short reign which could possibly be thrown over its neck if it was to walk down a well know route by itself.
Can anyone identify the horseman?
George mentions in his diary that four horses were sold by the Forestry Commission in 1959 of which one was sold to Len Stewart in March and at Inverliever in Jul ‘three horses were sold -one to Len Stewart and two to Munro’.
