Inverliever Felling by chainsaw - Tommy Stewart

Inverliever Felling by chainsaw - Tommy Stewart

Date Added: 22 November 2012 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1956 Picture No: 1318

The photograph is courtesy of the family of George Dey. George took many forestry photographs in his forestry career and some are now shown on this web site.

George records in his diary taking some photographs of felling, brashing and rafting in 1956 and this fits in with date on the first slide. The young man felling the marked Sitka spruce tree is Tommy Stewart from Inverliever who would likely have been working on contract with his father to the Forestry Commission.

Can anyone identify the type of chain saw being used? It would appear that the fuel tank had to be kept upright and perhaps swivels round for cross cutting. The clothes and felling method was as that used for felling with the hand cross cut saw which would no doubt have been kept in reserve when the temperamental chainsaw broke down!
