Glendoll Forest Drains for 1953/54 planting

This image shows a large slice of hillside which is being prepared for planting of trees in the 1953/54 season. Clearly seen are many drains across large parts of the area some which will certainly have been dug by hand but possible some by plough. Less clearly seen are the thousands of 15 x15 inch square thick turfs which have been hand cut from the drains or the plough furrows and hand spread out in a chequer board fashion over the ground between the drains.
The dark area of the drained hillside on the right hand side is certainly covered with turfs and the rows can just be seen in the large image. The turfs would be spread at about 5 foot 6 inch spacing working out at 1440 per acre.
