Montreathmont Forest - planting in ploughing

Date Added: 11 November 2012 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1954 Picture No: 1306

The photograph is courtesy of the family of George Dey. George took many forestry photographs in his forestry career and some are now shown on this web site.

Jim McConnel is examining some planting on ploughing at Montreathmont Forest. The ground appears to have been tine ploughed following burning of the rank heather. It is somewhat unusual in that it is a mixture of three pine and three spruce but the trees are planted in the bottom of the dry furrow in a small turf.

Can anyone recall this type of planting involving spruce elsewhere?
