Hydraulic tine plough 1952

This is an interesting photograph showing one of the early prototype of the mounted hydraulic plough working in Fetteresso. The ability to quickly lift the plough head and easily reverse the tractor into narrow spaces was a long sought goal. The plough head and beam is still raised by winch ropes but the rope passed over the top of a vertical ram arm pushed up by a hydraulic pump. The raising of this ram arm had the effect of drawing up the plough head out of the ground.

The fuel tank for the tractor has had to be shifted and it must have been difficult for the operator to see what was going on behind him. In a few years the hydraulic ram position was changed and attached directly to the plough beam. This resulted in the abolition of the gantry behind the operator and hence the very successful family of mounted tine ploughs was developed. These were the work horses of ploughing in steeper firm peat areas and also in among rocks and screes of many of the upland forests.
