Forestry Commission Keeper/Trapper Douglas Forbes with the results of a deer culling exercise. The firearm seen in the photograph would be totally illegal for the purpose now but was allowed in those early days.

I followed on from Douglas at Fonab but not until 1972 when I was Assistant Ranger to Jimmy Milne ( big Jim ). We only used .270, .243 and .308 rifle for deer control. Fonab forest became my remit for vermin control and I trapped enormous amounts of white hares and a number of foxes there. Capercaillie were at that time numerous on Fonab hill but we never shot Caper's even though it was legal then.
