Colin’s father Charlie picked up the short section of rail from the forest that was originally laid by James Jones and Sons, Timber Merchants, when they purchased the Bin Forest from the Duke of Gordon circa 1913 just prior to the start of the first World War.
The rail formed part of the light puggy line that ran from a former sawmill site above the present day Carnie Filling Station on the A96 on a gradually climbing contour to above and possible beyond the Mortlach Moss area. The line was used to carry the felled timber, planted circa 1839 by the Duke of Gordon, down to the mill. No doubt horses would have dragged the trees and logs to various points on the line where it would have been loaded on to the light rail wagons.
