Skaill Pilot Plot Caithness — Established Fo

An early overview of the forest plantation at Skaill, Caithness above Upper Dounreay possibly taken in the mid 1950s. There must have been significant doubt that this plantation would even grow as it was so exposed hence the setting up of a trial forest. There are a number of tree species planted but certainly the larch in the foreground look very healthy.
Does anyone remember it being planted?

My Dad believes it was planted in 1949/50. He was in charge of the planting and thinks there were about 5 foresters altogether. His name is Alex Grossert.

John Keenleyside (Forres)on reading Shona's comments recalls that two of the five foresters mentioned by her father were Ron Robson and Sid Wray. At this time there were no forestry workers in Caithness and the Research foresters had to recruit men from the Labour Office who had no experience of forestry what so ever. It was hard slow going for a while. The team of foresters established forestry research plots in other places including Watten, Strathy and even Hoy in Orkney.
