Pitmiddle Sawmill March 1915
This is one of two sawmill photographs found in the FC Bennachie Forestry Office, Aberdeenshire but no details are known about the location or the people.
The location appears to be the same as the photograph titled Pitmiddle Sawmill (Picture 1104) judging by the pile of timber products in the background.
The two pairs of fellers are kitted out for hand cross cut saw felling and axe snedding and dressed in traditional working garb of the time. No knee protectors are seen.
One of the two saws is very well worn as the tooth length is significantly shorter than that on the other saw. The gullet between the sets of teeth look quite wide and have a similarity to the American Disston saws with the Perforated Lance Tooth arrangement. The axes look like the traditional Scotch Wedge 6lb axe. It is difficult to identify the tree type but the crowns look like Scots pine although the bark of some have a similarity to larch.
Can anyone provide any information on location and identity of the men?
