Roy Faulkner on last visit before retiring

Roy Faulkner was about to retire and this was possibly his last tour around all the sites. He took over as head of the Forest Genetics Section in 1963 (following on from Prof John Matthews) and retired in 1988.

Joss and Colin were each in charge of a species for genetic improvement with Colin looking after Scots pine and Joss, his wife, responsible for Douglas fir. John Keenleyside remembers that Scots pine was relatively easy to work with and grafted without much problem. Douglas fir on the other hand, he says, was much more of a problem, the shoots were difficult to get hold off, difficult to take as grafts and then very susceptible to attack from aphids.
Joss apparently was a member of the Timber Corps during the war and served along with Prof John Matthew’s first wife and also Jean Charles from Huntly who worked latterly as a clerkess at Clashindarroch Forest.
