Douglas fir in Scotland

Mike Phillips, a former research head forester at Newton, published several papers during his career and in retirement. In the attached PDF are a number of papers which describe a large Douglas fir collection from Canada in 1921. In other short papers he discusses the reasons for poor form of some Douglas fir which originated from seed collected in this country.
Mike writes:
‘In 1921 4,000 lbs of Douglas fir seed (Pseudosuga taxifolia Brit) was imported to Britain by the Forestry Commission from the Lower Fraser Valley, British Columbia, Canada. Large areas of this origin were planted throughout Britain between the years 1924 to 1927. Whilst performance regarding rate of growth and particularly that of form has been very good, very few seed collections have been made from the plantations established in Britain’.
