Report on native pinewood remnants in Scotland
Mike Phillips, a former research head forester at Newton, published several papers during his career and in retirement. This is a compilation of two reports on visits to Native Pinewood remnants in Scotland the first part was published in Native Woodland Discussion Group newsletter No 21 1996 and the second part written in 1978.
Excursion C -The Native Pinewoods of North Loch Lomond - Report by Mike Phillips
‘Some 20 members of the group with tour leader Nick Mainprize departed by bus from Ardlui at 0930 and headed for the first stop at Glen Falloch. Presenters for the day were Penny Martin SNH. Colin MacBrayne RTS Ltd. and Graham Tuley FA, who all lent valued knowledge to the day. Much relief was expressed that the clouds at least held their moisture to themselves and we all returned dry at the end of the day, even underfoot there was little in the way of moisture no doubt due to the recent westerly summer’.
Mike goes on to describe site visits to Glen Falloch Pinewoods, Collie Coire Chuile Pinewood and Blackmount Pinewoods: the discussions on that day and the site characteristics.
Mike wrote the second part of the PDF on an early visit in 1978 to a number of then recognised sites for Native pinewoods. Sites described include Glenmoriston, Glengarry, Glen Nevis, Glenloy, Achnashellach and Glencarron, Beinne Eighe, Coulin, Amat and Rhidorroch. A number of names are mentioned but a few that include first names are Bob Murdoch and Jack Evans.
